What is bligh reef?

Bligh Reef is a submerged coral reef located in Prince William Sound, Alaska. It is approximately 1.5 miles long and 1,000 feet wide and sits just below the surface of the water, making it a potential hazard for ships.

In 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred when the tanker hit Bligh Reef, spilling nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil into the sound. This caused extensive damage to the aquatic ecosystem and local communities that rely on fishing and tourism.

Since then, efforts have been made to clean up the area and prevent further damage. The reef has also become a popular site for scuba diving, with divers able to explore the wreckage of the Exxon Valdez and observe the unique marine life that has begun to recolonize the area.
